THE GAMES
In the village of the old days, a long, long time ago, the village would have games in the spring and fall. Some of the games were with bows and the young braves would shoot their arrows to find the best of the braves. Sometimes this would be from horseback or standing in one place. They did the shooting as they ran and they would find the best of each.
They played a game with a ball made of leather, some say that this is where they got the American baseball game from but on with how this game was played. There was a pole standing in the center of the field with a ring on top of it. To make a point, you had to put the leather ball through the ring, not using your hands. You had a stick with a cup fixed to the end of it and you would catch the leather ball or scoop the ball up, throw in through the ring and making points each time you did so. This game was hard on the body. The braves would hit each other with their sticks and sometimes they got hurt.
They also had a game where they threw spears to find the best brave in the village.
They had foot races, very much like a cross country race is today, but much harder. The race was run over mountains, rivers and through the forests. It began at daybreak and would end at dusk. The distance was fixed, so they had to push themselves all the way, no time for stopping. There was not always a winner. This game was really done to find the best of the best; you might say the super brave.
As the games took place, there was dancing, food and more dancing and more food. The games would last for days. In the end, everyone cleaned up their place where they were staying and returned to their homes and work that was to be done. Everyone would remember the fun and good times they had at the games. next
